10 Incredible Facts Why to Visit Tanzania for Safari!

Home of the Great Wildebeest Migration

Each year, over a million wildebeest (along with zebras & gazelles) move in search of fresh pasture and water. This spectacular cycle spreads across Serengeti plains and into Kenya’s Masai Mara, offering dramatic river crossings and mass herds.

Big Five & Abundant Wildlife All Year Round

In parks like Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, you can see lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos—plus cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, birds, and more. Tanzania’s ecosystems support very high biodiversity.

From endless savannah plains, kopjes (rock outcrops), to volcanic highlands and craters—this includes the Ngorongoro Crater (an intact ancient volcanic caldera), active volcanoes like Ol Doinyo Lengai, and many scenic ridges.

Dramatic Landscapes & Geological Wonders

Cultural Richness & Tribal Traditions

Indigenous Maasai, Hadzabe, Datoga and others still live in or near safari areas; their customs, dress, dances, and connections to land add a deep cultural dimension to safari travel.

Variety of Safari Experiences

Whether you want luxury lodge stays, tented camps, walking safaris, balloon rides, or mixing safari + beach (Zanzibar etc.), Tanzania offers a wide choice.

Thousands of bird species, including migrants, waterbirds, raptors—especially during wet seasons and around lakes and crater rims. For bird lovers, Tanzania’s parks are superb.

Birdwatcher’s Heaven

Best Conservation & Safari Infrastructure

Tanzania has many well-managed national parks and reserves with good guides, 4×4 vehicles, domestic flight links, a range of accommodations, and a conservation ethos.

Volcano & Crater Highlights

  1. Ngorongoro Crater: 2-3 million years old inactive volcano collapsed to form a vast caldera, now a unique wildlife arena.

  2. Ol Doinyo Lengai: the only active volcano in Tanzania known for natro-carbonatite lava, sacred to the Maasai and visually dramatic.

  3. Other volcanic craters like Olmoti, Empakaai with scenic rims and views.

With shifting seasons, dramatic lighting (sunrise/sunset), crowd-light times, big predators in action, river crossings, calving & baby animals—all combine to give excellent photography moments.

Ecotourism & Wildlife Conservation Impact

Visiting Tanzania supports wildlife conservation, anti-poaching efforts, and local communities. Your safari helps protect endangered species and habitats.

Best Time to Visit, Rain Seasons & Animal Migration

Best Months & Seasons

  1. Dry Season (Peak Wildlife Viewing): June → October
This is often the clearest, least rainy period. Animals gather around waterholes; vegetation thins, making spotting easier

  2. Short Rains: November → December
Rain begins in some areas but it’s not overwhelming. Landscape becomes green, birds return, fewer tourists.

  3. Calving & “Green” Season / Long Rains: January → March
Especially in southern Serengeti (Ndutu), this is calving season—thousands of calves born in a short span. Excellent for predator sightings.

Heavy Rains: March → May
Called the “long rains”. Roads can be difficult, some lodges harder to reach, many animals disperse. But landscape lush, fewer crowds, good for birding and quieter safaris.

Why Seasons & Rain Matter

  1. Vegetation & Visibility: After rains, the grasses and bush grow, making wildlife harder to spot. In dry season, vegetation dies back, animals congregate near water sources, making visibility better.

  2. Animal Movement & the Migration
Migration is driven mainly by rainfall and resulting pasture growth. Wildebeest & zebras follow fresh grasses; they move south during rains, north or into drier corridors in dry times. River crossings happen when herds must cross in dry season (esp. June-Oct) to reach water

Animal Birth Seasons
Calving happens around January-March, particularly in southern Serengeti, thanks to fresh grass from rains. Predators take advantage of many vulnerable newborns.

Volcanoes & Geological Wonders

  1. Ngorongoro Crater – An inactive volcanic caldera that collapsed 2-3 million years ago. Now it’s the world’s largest unfilled, intact volcanic crater. In its bowl you’ll find mineral-rich soils, lakes, thousands of resident wildlife.

  2. Ol Doinyo Lengai – Active, still erupting occasionally, notable for its unusual lava and sacred status to Maasai. Offers dramatic views, cultural significance, and unique geological features.

  3. Other Craters like Olmoti, Empakaai in the Crater Highlands. These offer hikes, crater rim views, lakes, flora & birdlife. Great for combining wildlife safari with scenic trekking or nature walks.
